Situated
on Bali’s southern peninsula, on a hillside overlooking the Indian
Ocean and Nusa Dua, Amanusa (peaceful isle) is just 20 minutes from
Denpasar Airport. A serene retreat offering privacy and escape, Amanusa
is also close to Bali’s shopping and nightlife areas of Kuta, Sanur,
Legian and Seminyak. Guests can spend the day at the Amanusa Beach Club
where nine private bales rest on the white sand beach, or play golf on
one of Indonesia’s finest courses nearby.
Renowned for its dining, nightlife, shopping and entertainment, the coastline of southern Bali offers myriad opportunities for exploration. From the chic towns of Sanur and Seminyak to the beaches of Nusa Dua and Kuta, guests can experience the vibrancy of “new” Bali from a tranquil base at Amanusa.
Bustling streets are lined with shops selling colourful textiles, wood carvings, jewellery, stone sculptures and paintings, reflecting the artistic traditions of the island. Roadside stalls offer traditional Indonesian fare such as spicy fried rice and fish or chicken satay. Along the white sand beaches, fishing boats, dramatic sunsets and arching palm trees provide endless photo opportunities and the overall atmosphere is one of welcome. This region, with Amanusa at its heart, offers an exciting opportunity to glimpse how the contemporary and the classic are intertwined on this legendary island.
Amanusa’s colonnaded, open-air entrance hall is lined with baskets of white tuberoses. Framing the marble-floored foyer is a large teak-wood sculpture illustrating scenes from the Ramayana, the epic Hindu poem. Amanusa’s 35 thatched-roof suites enjoy a sensuous tropical setting and consummate privacy. Walkways connect the suites to guest facilities and offer easy access to the neighbouring golf course and the Beach Club, located ten minutes away on the coast. The resort has 35 thatched-roof suites linked by paved walkways and set behind foliage and mossy paras stone walls for added privacy. All suites have four-poster beds and round tables for private dining, a sunken indoor bath, outdoor shower, a garden courtyard and a terrace with a spacious canopied day bed.
Each villa at Amanusa is located on approximately 4,000 square metres of land and offers four or more bedrooms and a private swimming pool. Whilst the structures that make up each villa compound are identical, the villas are differentiated by the positioning of the buildings to embrace views, respect natural terrain and vegetation, and to protect the privacy of the villa. Typically, arrival to each villa is via a forecourt that contains a double garage and a vestibule that opens to the villa landscape. There is a central two-story structure that provides two guest bedrooms on the lower level, separated by a gallery and a staircase leading to an upper level. Here one finds a lounging and dining area with beautiful open views on either side of the central stairs that lead down to the swimming area.
A generously-proportioned swimming pool lies at the heart of each Aman Villa, surrounded by a terrace with sunbeds. Leading onto the pool terrace is a guest bathroom and shower, and beyond in the garden is a large open-air dining pavilion which can accommodate up to 10 diners. Rounding out the central facilities is an air-conditioned library which provides lounging and home theatre opportunities.
Walkways through the landscaped gardens link the main facilities to the other guest bedrooms, as well as the master suite. The master suite is larger than the guest bedrooms and offers a lounging area as well as an expansive terrace. All the bedrooms feature spacious en suite bathrooms and a number also offer outdoor bathtubs and showers. Completing each Aman Villa is the service building which houses the kitchen, laundry and staff accommodation.
The Terrace offers sweeping views of the golf course, the Indian Ocean, Nusa Dua and the Bukit Peninsula at the southern end of Bali, and serves Thai and Indonesian cuisines, as well as Continental fare during the day.
Open only for dinner, The Italian Restaurant provides seating in an elegant room with high ceilings and leaded windows. Guests can also enjoy dinner in the romantic outdoor courtyard amongst flowering frangipani trees overlooking the pool.
Framed by a trellis laden with bougainvillea blossoms is an alternative dining venue located next to the swimming pool. Here, the dining is alfresco beneath a covered colonnade and lunchtime fare includes sandwiches, salads and traditional Indonesian snacks.
The Bar is situated opposite the Terrace and enjoys the same lofty views of the sea and peninsula. This venue offers casual dining throughout the day as well as afternoon tea, and is the ideal location for enjoying a sunset drink.
Amanusa’s Beach Club is located on the beachfront of the Bali National Golf Resort. The Club consists of nine beach bales, each with two sunloungers. Refreshments and light meals are served in the informal restaurant, while showers and washrooms are also provided. The white-sand beach is one of Bali’s best and is fringed by a coral reef that provides a safe lagoon for swimming and seasonal water sports. The Beach Club is also the setting for candlelit barbecues, and sunrise breakfasts can be enjoyed in the privacy of the bales.
The large 30-metre pool is bordered by a bougainvillea-covered trellis and a high paras-stone wall on three sides. The Terrace restaurant and The Bar overlook the pool from the right and left sides, while The Italian Restaurant is situated in a secluded spot behind the pool, its entrance courtyard framed by flowering frangipani trees.
The Library specialises in books on Indonesian art and culture. A selection of novels, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs and board games, as well as a laptop for internet access, are also available. A unique selection of Balinese and Indonesian jewellery, indigenous handicrafts, gift items and resort wear is available for purchase in the Boutique.
Amanusa’s two all-weather tennis courts are floodlit for evening play. Attendants are available as playing partners or ball boys. A bale is located between the courts for shady breaks of iced chrysanthemum tea and other refreshments.
Amanusa’s resident therapists mix traditional Balinese massage techniques with Swedish massage and acupressure. Treatments are available in the privacy of guests’ suites, in the specially-designated Spa Suite or in one of the open-air Beach Club bales. Body treatments as well as facials, pedicures and manicures are also available. Amanusa’s Reiki master is on hand to address any energy imbalances and a reflexologist is available on request.
The resort has meeting facilities for up to 30 people and is a special venue for occasions such as weddings, anniversary celebrations, birthdays and family reunions. Amanusa’s boardroom is two rooms in one: a conference facility for informal meetings and a reception area for coffee breaks or enjoying cocktails. Facilities include direct lines for fax and telephone, a video and laser-disc system, satellite TV and a computer link to the projector and big screen.
Complimentary wireless broadband connections are available in all suites and public areas throughout the resort.
Bali’s golf courses are as diverse as the island itself. Amanusa offers guests complimentary use of its golf clubs. The Bali National Golf Resort, recognised as one of Asia’s top five courses, lies adjacent to Amanusa and offers a driving range, putting and chipping greens and a pro shop. Designed by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright, the championship 18-hole course enjoys a scenic seaside setting and when it reopens, Amanusa guests will once again enjoy a priority reservation system and may sign all charges to their Amanusa account.
