The Israel Police is responsible for public security, law enforcement, maintaining order, fighting crime and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.


Israel Police
 
The Israel Police operates in compliance with the Police Act of 1971 and additional articles of legislation. In the context of those powers, the Israel Police is responsible for the following areas:
 
Public Security
  • Prevention of acts of terror - The police conduct patrols and raids, and work to increase public awareness.
  • Response to calls from citizens requesting examination of suspicious objects, and dismantling of explosive devices
  • Deployment in terrorist incidents - Rescue of citizens, evacuation of casualties, searching for additional bombs, distancing of curious bystanders, directing traffic to alternative routes, arresting of suspects
  • Arrangement of security procedures in cities, towns and rural communities
  • Organization of volunteers in the context of the Civil Guard for routine and emergency functions

 Maintaining Law and Order
  • Response to reports of public disturbances
  • Response to demonstrations, unlawful gatherings and delinquency
  • Responsibility for detainees in detention centers, escorting of detainees to and from the courthouse
  • Implementation of court orders
  • Responsibility for security and maintenance of public order in government agencies, public institutions, foreign embassies and consulates, etc.
  • Responsibility for security and maintenance of public order at official ceremonies
  • Responsibility for security at official installations, including seaports and airports
   
Fighting Crime
  • Investigation of crimes and apprehension of offenders
  • Detection and exposure of unreported crimes, such as drug trafficking, extortion of "protection" money, and trafficking of stolen goods
  • Crime prevention – Instructing the public how to protect themselves and their property and how to make it more difficult for criminals to attain their objectives
  • Unique response to juvenile delinquency
  
 
Traffic Enforcement
  • Directing traffic and working to ensure smooth traffic flow
  • Enforcement of traffic laws
  • Investigation of traffic accidents and apprehension of traffic offenders
  • Instructing the public, especially young people, on traffic safety
  • Participation in the decision-making process in such matters as the planning and construction of roads and the placement of road signs and traffic lights; with the goal of increasing traffic safety
